Paula McMahon



Paula is a Civil Engineer with a wide range of experience managing large civil engineering projects including Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station early stages.  Her vast experience is reflected in her Chartered Fellowship status of both the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

Paula works for Sir Robert McAlpine overseeing and mentoring future ICE candidates.  She is also a key part of the A19 DBFO Project site safety, quality and sustainability leadership team as well as managing the projects’ Social Value.

Paula is an advocate for engineering and is an active member of her institutions.  Paula is an ICE Trustee and Head of UK Regions and Founding Chair of Engineering Together; a multi institution group.  Paula was instrumental in setting up Engineering Together in order to enable better collaboration between engineering sectors.

Paula strongly believes that the future generations of engineers and scientists will be in a better position to solve tomorrows problems.   Having a diverse workforce which reflects our society would help enable being open to new ways of thinking.  Paula has contributed to several events promoting diversity in all forms for the WES Tyne and Tees Cluster, the ICE and Engineering Together.

Paula is passionate about the need to address the climate crisis with urgency.  She organises and speaks in many forums, has lectured at Teesside University on the subject and is working with WES as the Climate Emergency Group Chair.  Paula personally championed the first ever climate change special issue of the ICE Proceedings: Civil Engineering entitled ‘How civil engineers can rise to the challenge of Climate Change’. She also championed the addition of cataloguing all papers against the UN SDGs.

Paula has gained many awards and accolades, she was one our WE50 recipients in 2019 and she is on the Northern Power Women Future List.  She also helps influence positive changes in the north east as a member of the Teesside University Industrial Liaison Group and North East Chamber of Commerce Transport Forum.  Paula is also an ICE Reviewer, Chairs the Editorial Panel for the flagship international publication ICE Proceedings: Civil Engineering and is a STEM and Apprentice Ambassador.
